ABOUT THE ROLE:
Working under the direction of practice providers and the Geriatric Services Supervisor, the Medical Assistant delivers a broad range of administrative and clinical support, with a special emphasis on geriatric services, to ensure high-quality care for older adult patients in a specialized geriatric outpatient program.
FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:
- Greets and prepares geriatric patients for examination and treatment.
- Obtaining patient vital signs, medication reconciliation, and all pertinent data related to their care.
- Appropriately documents information in the EMR.
- Prepares exam or treatment rooms with necessary instruments for scheduled procedures, focusing on the needs of older adults.
- Assists the clinical staff in completing examinations and procedures for patients as instructed.
- Performs CLIA waived lab tests as needed.
- Completes documentation of patient information accurately by using accepted charting abbreviations and medical terminology.
- Prepares and maintains supplies and equipment for treatment, including sterilization, with attention to the requirements of geriatric care.
- Assists with the preparation of equipment as needed for older adult patients.
- Assists as needed with scheduling of tests, treatments, and appointments specifically for geriatric patients.
- Conveys clinical information, medication, and dietary needs to geriatric patients and family members under the direction of the provider.
- May authorize prescription refills per provider’s instruction for patients.
- Provides accurate and timely medication reconciliation for the population.
- Prepares and administers medication/immunizations to geriatric patients upon successful completion of competency assessment.
- Maintains patient confidentiality and adheres to all HIPPA regulations, with particular sensitivity to geriatric patient privacy.
- Attends meetings, training sessions; maintains CPR certification and any other professional development activities relevant to geriatric care.
- Assumes other tasks as assigned in support of high-quality geriatric services.
SKILLS REQUIRED FOR SUCCESS:
- High School Diploma
- Must complete necessary Community Health medication/immunization administration competencies and all necessary education.
- Medical Assistant experience or equivalent education required
- Completed MA program that qualifies to take MA certification exam preferred
