Reports to: Paint Manager


Summary: The Paint Sales Associate provides expert customer service and product knowledge within the paint department. This role supports both retail and contractor customers with paint selection, color matching, tinting, and related supply needs. The associate ensures the paint department is well-stocked, organized, and operating safely, while contributing to overall store sales and service goals.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Customer Service

  • Assist customers with paint selection, color matching, tinting, and application advice.
  • Operate and maintain paint-mixing and tinting equipment.
  • Recommend complementary products such as brushes, rollers, primers, and finishes.
  • Process point-of-sale transactions accurately.
  • Provide positive representation of the store.
  • Proactively assist customers in solving problems.
  • Ensure customers are greeted and thanked upon entering and departing the store.
  • Provide a friendly, outgoing demeanor, and collaborate with customers and associates.
  • Forward any customer complaint that cannot be resolved to a member of management.
  • Possess strong product knowledge and knowledge of store layout and location of products.
  • Assist customers throughout the store with personal, customized service.
  • Other related functions and duties as assigned by Department Manager or designee.

Store Operations

  • Assist in creating a positive, professional, and safe work environment.
  • Ensure signage is current in the entire store.
  • Assist with providing a clean and orderly sales floor, including end caps and merchandising.
  • Communicate any store issue to the management team for follow up.
  • Communicate any merchandising, cost control, or sales idea to management team.
  • Ensure safe handling and storage of paint products and chemicals.
  • Be professional in appearance and actions.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the manager or designee.

Inventory Maintenance

  • Assist with receiving, checking in, and stocking of merchandise throughout the store.
  • Assist with maintaining back stock levels.
  • Assist with daily maintenance, orderliness, and cleanliness of the sales floor, receiving areas, and stockrooms.
  • May operate a forklift with proper training.
  • Assist with cycle counts and follow up re: inventory issues.

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively work with intercompany personnel.
  • Self-starter with strong problem solving and decision-making ability.
  • Demonstrate time management and organizational skills.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • H.S. Degree or GED equivalent
  • Retail sales experience preferred; paint or hardware background a plus.
  • Practical knowledge of products and materials (paint, hardware, and plumbing).
  • Must be able to work well in a team environment.
  • Proficiency with computers; aptitude for using computer applications and software.
  • Ability to operate paint-matching equipment.
  • Possess good manual dexterity; and ability to bend at waist, squat, kneel, climb, reach above shoulder, and stand/walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and move packages of 50 lbs. or more.
  • Valid MA Drivers License and Clean Driving Record.
  • Ability to acquire or maintain a Forklift and/or Hoisting License.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
