Job DescriptionSalary: $170,000 - $230,000, DOQ with excellent benefits including pension, health insurance, paid vacation and holidays.
Summary:
The General Manager is the Chief Executive Officer of the Marblehead Municipal Light Department and is responsible for the overall management, operation and financial oversight of the electric utility. The General Manager is appointed by and reports to the elected Marblehead Municipal Light Board.
The Marblehead Municipal Light Department Electric Light (MMLD) is a community-owned utility with a 130-year reputation of excellence, serving about 10,000 customers, with annual revenues of around $20 million. As the local provider of electric utility services, the General Manager owns the mission of MMLD to provide reliable carbon-free power, competitive rates, and a safe working environment for its employees, to the satisfaction of its customers.
Key Responsibilities:
Overall Management: Responsible for the overall management and control of the operations and property of the utility.
Team Leadership and Personnel Management: Guide overall personnel management through direct reports and the utilitys senior management team. Expand team as appropriate, organize succession planning for key positions to ensure seamless and effective operations. Provide direction in employee and labor relations, including negotiation of collective bargaining agreements. Foster a team-oriented work culture that prioritizes customer service and promotes a positive public image.
Reliability and System Management: Ensure the continuous, safe, and efficient delivery of electric services. Oversee the effective operation and maintenance of the utility through subordinates. Plan for upgrades to the distribution system to support reliable service.
Financial Management: Oversee financial planning activities, including capital and expense budgeting and management reporting, on a yearly and long-term basis. Ensure the financial viability of the utility through effective management of electric rates.
Compliance and Risk Management: Ensure utility operations comply with all federal, state, and municipal statutes, guidelines, rules, regulations and public utility principles/practices. Monitor internal financial controls and procedures to ensure the utilitys assets are protected.
Power Portfolio Management: Establish strategies to purchase (including hedging) energy, transmission and capacity resources, including renewable / decarbonized energy to meet energy requirements of the utility. Analyze, recommend and implement alternative power supply portfolio such as: decentralized energy production, energy conservation, demand-side management, battery storage, peak shaving.
Community and Stakeholder Engagement: Communicate with outside agencies, town officials, customers and residents. Exchange with other electric utilities, participate in industry associations / committees. Evaluate the impact of existing or proposed policies, procedures or statutes by electric utilities federal, regional and state regulators will have on operations and make recommendations to the Municipal Light Commission as to the appropriate course of action.
Innovation and Adaptability: Develop and implement innovative initiatives that anticipate future business opportunities related to the needs of citizens and businesses while ensuring the financial health of the utility.
Qualifications:
Education: A bachelors degree in engineering, or an equivalent degree providing technical and/or analytical skills. A masters degree in a technical or business-related field is desirable.
Experience: A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in industry, with at least five years in a top management role, preferably in an electric utility. Proven team leader. Experience in financial budgeting and capital management is essential.

Annual Salary:
The salary range for this position is $170,000 - $230,000, DOQ with excellent benefits including pension, health insurance, paid vacation and holidays.
