The Worcester Art Museum is seeking a friendly, customer-focused individual for a temporary part-time position as a Museum Shop Sales Clerk. This temporary position will help support the shop during the opening of our Arms and Armor Gallery and the busy holiday season, helping to create a welcoming and engaging retail experience for our visitors. The position is entry-level, with a starting rate of $15.50 hourly, and is expected to last 4-6 months.


As a Sales Clerk, you will assist customers with purchases, operate the Point-of-Sale system, and maintain merchandise displays that are visually appealing and fully stocked. You’ll also process online, mail, and phone orders, coordinate shipping, and contribute to the shop’s social media presence and online store updates.


We’re looking for someone who is enthusiastic about art and culture, and who can share knowledge about the Museum’s exhibitions and programs with visitors. Promoting memberships and encouraging deeper engagement with the Museum is also part of the role.


The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, a professional demeanor, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Flexibility is key, as weekend, holiday, and evening availability is required. Previous retail experience, cash handling skills, and basic computer proficiency are preferred.


This is a physically active role that involves standing for extended periods, lifting merchandise, and maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the shop.   • Excellent Customer Service Skills: The role centers on creating a welcoming experience for visitors, assisting with purchases, and promoting museum memberships, which requires strong interpersonal and communication abilities.
  • Retail and Cash Handling Experience: Operating a Point-of-Sale system, managing transactions, and preparing daily cash reports are core responsibilities, making prior experience in retail and handling money essential.
  • Basic Computer Literacy: The position involves processing online orders, maintaining the online shop, and possibly contributing to social media efforts, requiring comfort with digital tools and platforms.
  • Ability to Work Independently and as Part of a Team: The role demands self-motivation and collaboration with other staff members to ensure smooth shop operations and customer satisfaction.
  • Flexible Availability: Candidates must be available to work weekends, holidays, and some evenings to meet the demands of the holiday season and gallery opening.
