Position Description: Mechanical Engineer
52 Launch is seeking a highly creative and technically proficient Mechanical Engineer to lead the development of next-generation consumer products. You will sit at the intersection of Industrial Design and Manufacturing, responsible for transforming visionary concepts into high-volume, market-ready products. This role requires a mastery of complex organic geometry, innovative mechanism design, and a deep understanding of the manufacturing constraints associated with premium consumer brands.
Qualifications
- REQUIRED: Education: BS in Mechanical Engineering or higher.
- REQUIRED: Experience: 3–5+ years in a professional product design environment (Consultancy or In-house Consumer Products).
- CAD Mastery: Expert-level proficiency in SolidWorks or PTC Creo (including ISDX/Surfacing extensions). Expertise in top-down design practices, ‘Good Housekeeping’ best practices in file and feature naming and organization, experience with CAD system administration.
- Manufacturing IQ: Deep knowledge of a broad set of manufacturing methods, materials, and processes, secondary finishing (PVD, painting, anodizing), thermoplastic materials, over-molding, sonic welding, fastening methods and fasteners.
- Communication: Ability to articulate technical risks to cross-functional teams and advocate for engineering solutions that preserve design integrity. Ability to communicate clearly with overseas suppliers to ensure clarity of design requirements.
- Ability to work in rapidly changing environments and high volume project workloads
- Great people skills and ability to build personal relationships
- Portfolio: A strong portfolio demonstrating "works-like/looks-like" prototypes, exploded assemblies, file organization, and evidence of shipped consumer products.
Responsibilities
- Design for Excellence (DFM/DFA): Optimize parts for production manufacturing and assembly utilizing methods including injection molding, die casting, sheet metal forming, automated assembly, Etc... Perform rigorous draft analysis, wall-thickness optimization, and mold-flow simulations.
- Advanced CAD Modeling: Utilize Class-A surfacing techniques to translate Industrial Design (ID) sketches into robust, production-ready 3D models. Ensure that products are production manufacturable while embodying the original design intent.
- Mechanism Innovation: Design, prototype, and test unique moving parts—such as precision hinges, high-speed gear trains, and tactile interfaces—that define the user experience.
- Electronics Packaging: Design internal layouts for PCBA mounting, cable routing, and thermal management in tight, consumer-facing enclosures.
