Position Summary

We are seeking a skilled Pathologist Assistant to support surgical pathology, autopsy, and mortuary services in a high-volume academic medical environment. This role involves specimen accessioning, gross examination, frozen section support, autopsy assistance, and collaboration with pathologists, residents, and laboratory teams to ensure diagnostic accuracy and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities

Surgical Pathology & Frozen Section Support

  • Accession, dissect, and perform gross descriptions of surgical specimens
  • Gross large resection specimens (e.g., colon, mastectomy) and selected neuro and melanoma specimens
  • Support frozen section preparation, staining, and processing
  • Assist with histology, immunohistochemistry, and tissue preparation
  • Maintain dissection suite operations, supplies, equipment, and infection control standards
  • Perform quality control, equipment calibration, and documentation
  • Teach and mentor Pathologist Assistant students and grossing staff

Autopsy & Mortuary Services

  • Perform postmortem examinations including evisceration and dissection
  • Coordinate legal authorization, documentation, and communication with medical teams
  • Assist with organ sampling, photography, and archival documentation
  • Support decedent affairs operations including body release, documentation, and family communication
  • Maintain morgue cleanliness, safety, and regulatory compliance

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Pathologist Assistant program
  • PA (ASCP) Certification required (within 6 months of hire if not already certified)
  • 1–2 years of Pathologist Assistant experience preferred
  • Education and training meeting CLIA requirements
  • Strong knowledge of histologic techniques, laboratory safety, and infection control
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Basic computer proficiency and attention to detail
