Position Overview:

The Water Safety Instructor is responsible for teaching and supervising water safety classes at the Bennett Field & Pool in Worcester, MA. As a Water Safety Instructor, you will work with other Safety Instructors and Lifeguards to lead fun safety activities and water games that maximize independence in the water. The swim program is open to individuals with disabilities of all ages and their families.

The summer program will run Friday mornings from 8:00am - 11am starting in July 11 running through August 15, 2025.

Essential Functions:

  • Be familiar with, and teach basic water safety skills
  • Be knowledgeable about aquatics exercise and its contraindications
  • Manage and instruct a group of 6-12 individuals with a range of disabilities (2 age groups)
  • Teach in accordance with the programming and leadership elements as outlined in the certification manual
  • Train and manage 2+ volunteers who will support activities with swimmers in the water
  • Recognize and respond effectively and appropriately to aquatic emergencies by using proper CPR first aid techniques as governed by the American Red Cross and MHS code procedures
  • Protect and maintain the dignity and confidentiality of others during stressful and/or emergency situations
  • Ensure participants compliance with safety rules and regulations as required by the DCR (Department of Conservation and Recreation)
  • Enforce all DCR pool and state policies, rules, and regulations relative to the pool area for maintenance and potential hazards
  • Complete attendance and incidence reports in a timely manner.
  • Report unsafe conditions and faulty equipment to Aquatics Director or supervisor

Other Functions:

  • Participate in Easterseals Water Safety and disability etiquette training
  • Create a respectful, fun, and social atmosphere for swimmers including both individual and group activities

Qualifications:

  • Current Aquatic Exercise Association (AEA) OR Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification
  • ATRI Aquatic Therapy & Rehab Certification
  • American Red Cross CPR certified
  • American Red Cross Community First Aid & Safety certified
  • Must be 18 years of age

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience providing water exercise instruction to people with disabilities
  • Experience working with all age groups in an aquatic setting.
