Position Summary: The Toolmaker III will work independently to set up and operate a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments. They will fabricate and modify parts to make, repair machine tools, or maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures. Working both independently and in a team environment, the Toolmaker III will collaborate with Engineering, Manufacturing, and Quality.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide support and assistance to all tool room team members. Assist prototype team members as requested.
  • Construct and troubleshoot engineering designs into a viable manufacturing process.
  • Determine fabrication process and sequence without assistance.
  • Design and/or fabricate complex assemblies, jigs, fixtures, and gages from drawings or own design.
  • Works within tolerances of +/- .0002”.
  • Provide guidance to less senior Toolmakers.
  • Participate in and sustain 5S Standards.
  • Must follow all required Safety and ISO procedures.
  • Regular on-site attendance and punctuality is a necessary function of this position.
  • May be required to work in other functional areas and/or facilities depending on business needs.
  • Participate on problem solving teams for driving to root cause of internal and external quality failures, particularly related to prevention of customer escapes.
  • May be required to work overtime or alternate shifts based on business needs.
  • Miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Education/Experience & Skills:

  • High School diploma or equivalent, associate’s degree in applied science in Machine Tool, and 7+ years of previous experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Applicable experience described as: advanced milling, turning, grinding, 2D & 3D machine programming, CAD/CAM, metrology, quality control, fixture design and fabrication, EDM, heat treatment, and OSHA.
  • Possess an understanding of and ability to apply geometry, trigonometry, and statistical process control.
  • Proficient in reading and understanding blueprints and knowledge of Geometric Design and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Ability to use various precision measuring instruments including micrometers, indicators, and both optical and physical gaging.
  • Possess basic knowledge and troubleshooting of various other industrial processes and machinery including stamping, injection molding, casting, automation, and robotics.
  • Possess a working knowledge of metallurgy.
  • Must be able to clearly, concisely, and accurately convey ideas and information to others, both verbally and in written form.

Working Conditions:

  • Regularly perform repetitive tasks.
  • Work is primarily standing (90 + % of the shift) except for lunch and break periods.
  • Shifts are 8 hours, 10 hours, and 12 hours.
  • The duties of this job normally require exposure to a typical manufacturing environment. Frequent standing, sitting, stooping/squatting, walking, and stair climbing can be expected along with frequent lifting and/or moving of tooling, parts containers, and materials up to 40 pounds.
  • Must be able to reach with hands and arms, bend and kneel frequently at a minimum of 50% of the shift, as well as undergo repetitive wrist, hand, elbow, shoulder, and ankle motions.
  • Must demonstrate proficient fine motor skills, ability to grip, reach, pull, turn, and use tools to torque fixtures in various machinery or in the assembly, machining, or testing of parts.
  • Specific vision abilities required may include close vision, distance vision, peripheral and depth perception, and the ability to focus on fine print.
  • Must wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) where required.
  • Must comply with all work exposure EH&S training requirements and adhere to SIG SAUER Inc. security mandates.
