Consumer & Home Equity Underwriter

Location: Boston, MA Onsite

Compensation: $70,000–$90,000 base + performance-based incentives tied to closed loans

Interview Process: Initial phone/video screen followed by an onsite interview


Overview

This role is responsible for reviewing, analyzing, and underwriting a wide range of consumer and home equity lending products, including both secured and unsecured loans and lines of credit. The underwriter ensures lending decisions align with internal credit standards, regulatory requirements, and overall risk tolerance, while supporting a member-focused lending environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review, analyze, and underwrite residential home equity loans/lines and consumer loan applications
  • Evaluate borrower creditworthiness using credit reports, income documentation, asset verification, and other financial data
  • Assess credit risk and determine approval, denial, or escalation recommendations in accordance with lending authority
  • Ensure lending decisions comply with applicable federal, state, and local regulations as well as internal policies
  • Partner with branch teams and internal stakeholders to obtain additional documentation or clarification when needed
  • Clearly communicate underwriting decisions and conditions in a timely and professional manner
  • Maintain complete and accurate loan files and underwriting documentation
  • Support internal staff by providing guidance on underwriting decisions and loan structure
  • Prepare recurring reports for leadership and committee review as requested
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned

Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience underwriting consumer and home equity loans in a banking or credit union setting
  • Strong knowledge of consumer and residential lending, credit analysis, and risk evaluation
  • Working familiarity with loan origination systems and related financial software
  • Solid understanding of applicable regulations including TRID, HMDA, Reg B, and Fair Lending
  • Strong analytical skills with high attention to detail
  • Clear, professional communication skills and a collaborative work style
  • NMLS registration preferred or willingness to obtain

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, business, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience
