Job Summary:


Buckingham Browne & Nichols School is seeking a Cross-Country coach for the Varsity and JV Program. The Cross-Country Coach will report to the Director of Athletics and work closely with the Head Varsity Cross-Country Coach and Associate Director of Athletics for Upper School. The BB&N Athletic Department expects its coaches to operate within the athletic philosophy of BB&N and adhere to the BB&N coaches’ manual. Responsibilities of this position include but practice planning and meet oversight, mentoring and instructing high-school aged runners in skill development, character development, and teamwork.


The Upper School Coaching Schedule includes a Pre-season meeting on the evening of Monday, August 25. In addition, the season begins on August 27, 2-25 and may extend until November 16, 2025. Practices range from 3:45-6:00 pm.


Essential Functions and Key Objectives:

  • Educates individuals, groups, or teams on the rules, strategies, and techniques of Cross-Country

  • Plans, organizes, and leads practice sessions.

  • Trains, encourages, and motivates athletes to prepare them for meets and competitive events.

  • Teaches safety rules and regulations and ensures they are enforced.

  • Develops physical conditioning programs that equip athletes to meet their potential.

  • Evaluates team members to determine fitness levels and potential; assigns positions or roles to athletes based on strengths and weaknesses.

  • Ensures athletes are using equipment properly and safely.

  • Identifies the strengths and weaknesses of players and modifies coaching strategies accordingly.

  • Remains current on changes in rules, coaching philosophies and techniques, and technology relevant to particular sport or sports.

In addition, the ideal candidate will demonstrate a desire to work with Upper school students, a commitment to working in and fostering an inclusive community, excellent communication and collaboration skills with students, parents, and colleagues, and great attention to detail.
