Job Description
Vice President of Construction Operations
About Western Builders
For more than fifty years, Western Builders has earned a reputation as a trusted “builder’s builder,” specializing in preconstruction, general contracting, and construction management for academic, senior housing, and healthcare clients.
Based in Granby, Massachusetts, we’re a privately held subsidiary of The O’Connell Companies. This gives us the unique ability to deliver the hands-on, collaborative experience of a modest-sized firm while leveraging the expertise and resources of a larger organization. It’s the best of both worlds — agility, trust, and personal service backed by deep technical strength.
The Opportunity
As the VP of Construction Operations, you’ll report directly to the President and oversee the success of multiple high-profile, high-risk projects. You’ll provide guidance to Project Managers and Superintendents, champion operational excellence, and ensure Western Builders continues to deliver projects safely, profitably, and to the highest standards of quality.
This isn’t just a job — it’s a leadership pathway to shape the future of Western Builders.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and inspire Project Managers and Superintendents, building a culture of accountability, collaboration, and growth.
- Oversee all phases of project execution, ensuring schedules, budgets, and quality standards are met.

- Protect Western Builders’ interests by proactively managing contracts, financial terms, and risk.
- Guide preconstruction and kickoff processes to ensure teams are set up for success.
- Champion safety across all sites and support Superintendents in maintaining a safe workplace.
- Manage company labor resources, seeking opportunities to self-perform work profitably.
- Partner with business development to promote Western Builders’ capabilities and strengthen client confidence.
- Take ultimate accountability for project outcomes across all assigned work.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of construction experience, including at least 7 years as a Project Manager and/or Superintendent.
- Demonstrated leadership success with diverse and complex projects.
- Bachelor’s degree in construction, civil engineering, architecture, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Proficiency in Procore, Microsoft Office, Sage, Bluebeam, and scheduling software (Primavera P6 or similar).
- Expertise in cost management, contract administration, and scheduling (Critical Path Method).
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
- First Aid & CPR certification preferred.
