Job Description

Position: Assistant Teacher

Reports to: Head of School

Classification: Part-Time Hourly

Hours: 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Qualifications:

  • Confident, capable, playful, patient, well-organized, flexible, professional, dependable
  • Love and respect for children
  • Strong desire to be part of a team
  • Willingness to collaborate with others
  • Montessori training or experience preferred
  • Maintenance of the standards of EEC Preschool Teacher
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Spanish language skills a plus
  • CORI/SORI, fingerprinting background check certification

Physical Abilities:

  • Ability to manipulate classroom materials and work on the floor

General Responsibilities:

The Aftercare Assistant Teacher supports the work of Birch Tree Montessori by assisting in the preparation and maintenance of the after care learning environment and management of student behavior. They are responsible for the personal and social achievement, safety and physical well being of the children under her/his supervision. At the end of each day, the aftercare teacher is expected to help maintain the environment, assisting with putting materials away.

Specific Responsibilities:

Family Relations

  • Build productive relations with parents through warm daily greetings and check-ins.
  • Promptly answer the door and greet waiting families with a smile

Administration

  • Participate in daily maintenance of the aftercare classroom
  • Report all accidents/incidents immediately​ to the Lead Teacher/Head of School
  • Notify the Lead Teacher immediately of difficulties with children or parents. If Lead Teacher is not available, document incidents with notes and inform Lead Teacher/Head of School asap.
  • Complete all reports and maintain student records as requested by the Lead Teacher/Head of School
  • Attend staff meetings, as required

Educational Program & Student Services

  • Prepare an environment in which furnishings and materials are complete and correspond to the needs of the class, as directed.
  • Maintain an orderly environment and keep it clean and in good condition, as directed.
  • Repair materials and equipment, as necessary.
  • Help train and supervise children regarding emergency situations and practices such as fire drills, as directed
  • Carefully supervise the students working to ensure a peaceful classroom environment
  • Sit on the floor and play with the children modeling appropriate behaviors
  • Encourage quiet, calm play

  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to professional ethics
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to Montessori education; model the Montessori values of grace, courtesy, respect and responsibility in visible daily actions
  • Phrase directives positively when speaking to children
  • Demonstrate commitment to competent communications and conflict resolution efforts across the school community.
  • Protect the privacy and confidentiality of each student

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior classroom environment
  • Limited physical effort required
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk

It is expected that all staff will function as self-directed members in a team effort. Attendance and punctuality by all is courteous and expected. All activities and performances should meet appropriate professional standards and adhere to the philosophy and purpose of Birch Tree Montessori. Birch Tree is closed for all major holidays and public school vacations in December, February, and April.
