Supervisor: Executive Director

Salary/Rate of Pay: $45 hour/depending on experience

Job Description:

Lake Champlain Maritime Museum is looking for an experienced, detail-oriented Part-Time Controller to join our nonprofit organization. This role is essential to ensuring our financial stability, providing oversight of accounting functions, budget planning, cash forecasting, and strategic financial guidance to senior leadership and the board of directors. The position reports to the Executive Director.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or equivalent experience required
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience required
  • Nonprofit accounting experience required
  • Proficient in QuickBooks Online (QBO) and Excel
  • Strong communication, organizational, and time management skills and a welcoming attitude
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities effectively
  • A commitment to collaboration and enthusiasm for Lake Champlain, its history, and its future

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Financial Reporting & Analysis
    • Prepare, monitor, and analyze monthly and annual financial reports
    • Reconcile bank, credit card, and cash accounts; maintain balance sheet accuracy and track restricted cash
    • Investigate significant variances and offer actionable recommendations
    • This position is responsible for general and grants accounting.
    • Verify account postings and ensure accuracy
  • Budgeting, Forecasting & Planning
    • Lead development of the annual budget
    • Provide monthly and quarterly budget-to-actual analyses, overall and by department
    • Develop and maintain ongoing cash forecasts to monitor liquidity and guide short-term financial decisions
    • Offer strategic insights based on financial performance and anticipated cash flow
  • Audit & Compliance
    • Collaborate with external accountants to prepare for the annual financial audit and tax filings
    • Establish and maintain internal financial controls and procedures
  • Financial Leadership
    • Deliver financial projections and data-driven insights to senior leadership
    • Present financial updates and guidance during board meetings
  • Team Development
    • Supervise and mentor a Staff Bookkeeper to build a strong, efficient accounting team
    • Support program managers in producing, reading, and responding to financial reports

Work conditions:

This position will include office work during regular office hours with occasional after business hours meetings.
