Position Purpose:

To provide metrology engineering support multiple production departments by creating part inspection methods/programs and supporting production inspection and calibration.

Essential Duties and responsibilities:

  • Plans and performs in-process and final inspections of mechanical, metal and composite materials, parts and assemblies using precision measuring equipment such as calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, depth gages, optical comparators, and height gages. 
  • Programs and runs metrology equipment, including CMM and programmable vision equipment that pass MSA requirements for repeatability and reproducibility (Type 1 MSA and GR&R requirements). 
  • Performs First Article Inspections (FAI) and generates FAI reports and clearly presents written and verbal descriptions of results including deviations from customer engineering requirements. 
  • Creates (or collaborates with QE to create) work instructions necessary to run automated programs and perform manual inspection methods. 
  • Performs supplier source inspection when required and collaborates with supplier programmers for the transfer of automated inspection programming. 
  • Collaborate with Internal Vaupell and Customer metrologists on the transfer of CMM and other visual inspection programs to achieve successful work transfers without the need for re-programming. 
  • Records accurate and concise descriptions of nonconforming conditions identified during inspection of product utilizing computer applications and databases and collaborate with supplier/customer metrology on those conditions. 
  • Requires an extensive knowledge of inspection procedures, processes, devices and aids in a manufacturing environment as well as a wide and comprehensive knowledge of inspection concepts and principles including the ability to read and understand complex engineering drawings, specifications, procedures and manuals. 
  • Creates and/or follows established calibration procedures to ensure the timely and effective calibration of metrology equipment. 
  • Responsible for following all Vaupell policies and standard operating procedures and safety practices.

Job Qualifications/Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree desired
  • 5+ or more years of progressive experience in mechanical lay-out inspection, CMM inspection, and vision system inspection methods.  Formal training through an approved PC-DMIS training provider is required. May substitute additional experience in lieu of formal education and training. 
  • Requires extensive knowledge of inspection procedures, processes, devices and aids in a manufacturing environment as well as a wide comprehensive knowledge of inspection concepts and principles.  This knowledge includes understanding of the latest ASME, ANSI, and NIST standards for inspection and calibration, GD&T. 
  • Advanced Mathematics (Algebra/Geometry/Trigonometry) 
  • Ability to work with a team, ability to work in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. 
  • Ability to write inspection instructions necessary to run programs and routines and successfully train inspection personnel to instructions. 
  • Proficient in interpreting mechanical/composite drawings and specifications.  
  • Ability to use Microsoft office suite including outlook, excel, powerpoint, and word. 
  • Ability to read, speak, understand and follow instructions in English.
  • Must be able to wear and properly use the required personal protective equipment.

Candidates must be a “US Person” (i.e. US Citizen or Permanent Resident) to ensure Vaupell's compliance with ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) and EAR (Export Administration Regulations)


Physical Requirements:

· Must be able to remain standing/walking through most of shift. The uncorrected or corrected vision in at least one eye shall be equal to or better than the following:

A. Distance Vision: 20/25

B. Vision at 14 Inches: Jaeger Number 2

C. Color Vision Normal
