Clinical Blood Biochemist/Microbiologist at Biomedical Diagnostics Startup
Job Description
We are a Boston-area biomedical diagnostics startup company seeking a Clinical Blood Biochemist/Microbiologist to join our team.
Your mission will be to apply your biochemistry and microbiology expertise in support of developing rapid clinical diagnostics. Working closely with a multidisciplinary team spanning many fields of expertise, from medical microbiology to machine learning, you will take the lead designing, executing, and interpreting experiments involving blood-borne pathogens and biochemical growth conditions—helping advance diagnostics that improve patient outcomes around the globe.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree or PhD in biochemistry, microbiology, or a related life sciences field
- 2+ years of wet-lab experience, ideally in a BSL2 and/or clinical laboratory setting
- Hands-on experience with microbial culturing, gram staining, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing
- Experience designing and conducting experiments involving growth of bacteria and fungi in blood and/or blood-derived growth media
- Deep understanding of blood chemistry, including pH, blood additives (e.g. anticoagulants), and blood components (molecular and cellular)
- Skilled in preparing and managing blood cultures and growth assays for clinically relevant organisms
- Excellent documentation habits and experience writing and maintaining SOPs and lab protocols
- Strong organizational and communication skills, both written and verbal
- Commitment to accuracy, quality control, and laboratory safety standards
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting or working alongside clinical microbiologists in a diagnostic or research setting
- Familiarity with laboratory instrumentation for microbial growth and analysis (e.g. incubators, anaerobic chambers, spectrophotometers)
- Experience with fungal identification or culturing in clinical matrices
- Exposure to automated microbial identification tools or molecular platforms (e.g. MALDI-TOF, BioFire)
- Familiarity with basic programming or data analysis tools (Python, R, Excel macros, etc.)
