Works alongside the Statewide Director for Vision and Vision Loss Services, COMS colleagues, and O&M Assistants to provide high quality Orientation & Mobility/Low Vision services to adults served by the Department of Developmental Services who have legal blindness, deafblindness, vision impairment or question of vision loss. The responsibilities of the O&M Specialist fall into the following categories: Clinical, Documentation, Advocacy, Training, Special Projects and Consultative Service.

COMS meet with individuals, their families, and those who support them at individuals’ homes as well as day programs, jobs and or anywhere as needed in the community. COMS may accompany individuals to an eye appointment and/or assist with completing the Getting Ready for the Eye Exam form.

Services include the provision of: Orientation & Mobility, Functional Vision, and Environmental Assessments; Low Vision Services; Staff / SensitivityTraining; assistance as needed with Development of Educational Materials including resource handouts, and lectures; working with the MCB/DDS Partnership Project; provision of Consultation and information re: assistive technology and the full range of Resources for individuals with vision loss including the American Printing House for the Blind (APH) Federal Quota Account, DVS, Mopix, Braille, talking books, and large print

Supervises Vision Rehabilitation Assistant in the Southeast Region.
