Technicians will participate in extended sea-going research cruises, assist with at-sea and shore-based biological sampling, maintain advanced survey equipment, and ensure high-quality data collection to support NOAA Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC) research programs.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

<li>Support annual research cruises (60–120 days at sea) by collecting biological and physical survey data.</li>
<li>Sort, identify, measure, and dissect fish and invertebrates; collect biological samples (age, growth, maturity, genetics, diet).</li>

Description of Role
Your task is easy to understand but challenging to do well: predict when the user’s foot will next touch the ground and determine how much assistive torque should be applied. There are a few constraints: it has to be done real-time on a small microcontroller, the inputs are noisy, the sensors are limited and imperfect, the terrain, gait and/or gait speed might be changing, the user adapts to your previous actions, and a machine learning algorithm with a 1% false positive rate will result in the user tripping every 100m.
As a controls engineer at Dephy you will have a direct effect on deciding the appropriate behavior of our devices while worn by a user. You will do extensive R&amp;D to take data from our sensors, understand what a user is doing, and decide how the motors should respond. This process involves numerous iterations of analyzing data, prototyping simulated solutions, moving simulations to hardware, building custom tools, testing on people, and debugging.

<li>Engineering Principles &amp; Problem Solving: Strong knowledge of topics such as biomechanics, non-classical control, etc which allow for quick identification of problems as well as potential solutions.</li>
<li>Management &amp; Planning: Planning a project from start to finish, including creation of requirements, constraints, timelines, and methods to manage risk. </li>

Desired Qualifications
<ul>
<li> Strong knowledge of C and Matlab, intermediate level of Python (Required for Software role)</li>
<li>Experience with Git workflow and version control (Required for Software role)</li>
<li>Understanding of biomechanics, human locomotion, and augmentation</li>
<li>Experience with human subject testing, data collection, real-time performance tracking</li>
<li>Experience with high-level “non-classical” control algorithms &amp; techniques (MPC, LQR, Kalman filtering, etc.)</li>
<li>Experience converting basic prototypes to quality implementations focused on maintainability and modularity</li>
<li>Experience with walking robots, exoskeletons, and/or active prostheses</li>

Aquinas Consulting is currently looking to fill a Controls and Automation Engineer job for our direct client. In this role, you will be responsible for developing and supporting automated systems used to move, handle, and inspect subsea fiber cable in cable handling and assembly operations. You will support major automation initiatives, including autonomous cable loading, automated pan connection systems, and defect detection during operations. This position requires flexibility to work any shift to support critical manufacturing needs.
Controls and Automation Engineer job Responsibilities:
<ul>
<li>Design, implement, and maintain PLC-, industrial PC-, and robot-controlled automation systems</li>
<li>Integrate motion control hardware including servos, gantries, and position feedback devices</li>
<li>Support machine vision–based inspection and alignment systems</li>
<li>Perform troubleshooting and corrective action on control-related issues</li>
<li>Develop and validate safety-critical controls logic, including interlocks and fail-safes</li>
<li>Lead commissioning and acceptance testing of new automated equipment</li>
<li>Collaborate with mechanical engineering on fixtures, guarding, and risk reduction</li>
<li>Analyze downtime data and implement preventive improvements</li>
<li>Create and maintain documentation including wiring diagrams and PLC archives</li>

Qualifications:

<li>Strong PLC and motion control programming experience (Allen-Bradley or equivalent)</li>
<li>Experience integrating cameras and sensors into automated systems</li>
<li>Knowledge of industrial networking, safety system design, and mechanical interfaces</li>
<li>Ability to read electrical schematics and mechanical drawings</li>
<li>Strong problem-solving and communication skills</li>
<li>Good computer proficiency, including data acquisition and documentation tools</li>
<li>Willingness and ability to work any shift to support production</li>
<li>Must be able to meet the physical demands of the job, including lifting up to 40 lbs., climbing, kneeling, and working in confined spaces</li>
