Civil Service Appointment Status: Non-Competitive
1.) Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma;
2.) Equivalent of two years child care;
3.) Meets all qualifications in accordance with the Chemung County Civil Service Commission.
4.) Ability to establish and maintain discipline;
5.) Ability to communicate effectively;
6.) Ability to assist/support at risk students and/or those with handicapping conditions;
7.) Special Working Conditions: Good physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Length of Work Days/Year:
1.) Standard work day is Monday through Friday, 6.75 hrs per day.

This position is responsible for assisting school teachers in the performance of their duties by carrying out nonprofessional tasks associated with the teaching process and program needs. General supervision of students in the building is also expected. Support for daily activities occurring throughout the building as assigned by the principal.
Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
1.) Assists in maintaining order in the building;
2.) Works with individuals or small groups providing guidance through project completion i.e. remedial reading, mathematics comprehension, computer laboratory;
3.) Helps to set up science laboratory equipment, conducts experiments and performs limited review of student laboratory reports;
4.) Assists teachers in the correction of test papers, recording of grades, maintaining files and preparing statistical reports;
5.) May correct themes, compositions, standardized and objective tests;
6.) May supervise class when teacher is out of the room;
7.) Assists with study hall, corridor, lunchroom, bus duty and other monitorial and patrol duties;
8.) Fills out, copies and types forms, reports and documents;
9.) Assists in routine classroom housekeeping chores;
10.) Organizes and participates in group games and related activities;
11.) Reads and tells stories to children;
12.) Receives, issues and renews library books and other educational materials;
13.) Assists teachers and students in selecting supplementary materials from the library;
14.) May store and deliver audio-visual materials;
15.) Provide general care and supervision of students;
16.) May assist in providing personal care and supervision of students;
17.) May assist in providing personal care to special needs students I.e. tube-feeding, diapering;
18.) May sign for deaf students;
19.) Assists in lunchroom with monitoring students, cleaning tables, restocking condiments and other tasks to assist in cafeteria as needed;
Follows all Elmira Heights Board of Education and District policies Performs related duties as required or assigned.
